hey I need some serious advice. I have had a Mirena IUD for three years. I haven't had a period the whole time. Well, about 2 weeks ago I started having severe pain in my left ovary. They seem to come and go. Well about 3 days ago I started having cramps and last night I started bleeding. Not too much, just enough to be concerned. I got dizzy too. I think it's my period but I hope it's nothing more serious. Also, it just doesn't seem right that it just shows up after three years without a period. Has this happened to anyone else?

I had almost the same. Mirena was deployed in July 2007. Recently I have felt like I have no more cramps along with bleeding heavier than usual. Although my cramps are not in a specific part. It worried me because I haven't had a menstrual cycle in almost a year and one day I did. Many people say that hormones have really messed up the body. So this could be your case. Otherwise, you should ask your doctor to be on the safe side.

In order. I'm freaking out about the same thing. I had my daughter on February 6th. I had the IUD removed in March or April. Suddenly there's not much blood coming out, but enough to worry me. I haven't had my period for over 2 ½ years. my fiancé is going to sea tomorrow and now i'm worried about being pregnant. Anyone else afraid of pregnancy because of the bleeding or am I just being paranoid?

the same for me. I can't find anything about pregnant women. I think we're those chosen few that go through a little hormonal shift and our bodies respond accordingly. Recently (like the last two months) I've fallen head over heels in love with the man I'm dating (he feels the same way. Don't worry) and I think that might be the reason. Her fiancé is going...
I have had Mirena for over 3 years. Not a single period. Occasionally a little cramp, barely noticeable, and maybe a little tenderness in the breasts. Nothing more. We just had a very "emotional" relationship and I started bleeding and cramping very easily, about 1/3 the normal time for me before Mirena. It could have moved inside and caused the cramping and bleeding. By the way, my insertion was one of the most painful experiences of my life with lots of bleeding for about a week afterwards until it was all over. So I know the leveling up could definitely be the cause of the bleeding and cramping.
I would say if you get to a point where the bleeding or cramping won't stop, see your doctor. When you're light enough not to worry, do your best to stay calm and get on with your day as usual. Otherwise, the stress in the head can bring more into the body.
I will let you know if mine changes but it sounds like me... oh I also had my 25th birthday last day which was extremely exciting for me this could be the result of 2 whole weeks of madness. ..

I had the same problem... I had my IUD removed in April 2007. I rarely had the slightest bit of bleeding but I haven't had my full period yet, nowhere near... but now all of a sudden, almost 3 years later I'm having frequent periods... It started about 2 months ago and I've had every two weeks since my period. not just short periods they last about 5 days and i have cramps and all but i just don't understand why this is happening, i'm suddenly starting to freak out about it!

Hello. I've had mine for almost 3 years and it's hell! After getting it a few weeks later me and my partner had issues, my device literally stabbed it so I cut the strings again because they hurt my partner. So about a month later I was bleeding and I used a tampon, my doctor said it was fine, well I couldn't get it out, it was stuck to my device, when I took it out it was moving my device but the doctor said it's ok So it's been a year now and I have a lot of discomfort in my pelvic area and I bleed every time I have sex and I've been to my doctor several times, he says everything is fine so I'm confused! but then he told me if the pain persisted he would do a procedure where he would look at my pelvic area to see inside. I have to? Now I'm worried because I'm bleeding more and more every month and now I'm on my 3rd week of bleeding and I'm tired and in pain. I have horrible cramps in my thighs and back, all over the pelvic area and I feel bad. I feel a lot of pressure where my ovaries would be. make? I made an appointment with my main doctor today, maybe I'll have some answers. Have any of you had this problem before?

I just want to say to anyone who has the Mirena coil, get it out! If you have trouble with it, take it off. I had it in February 2008 at my 6 week check up after my daughter was born. It never felt right That did not please me. I told the dr. and he said it was just getting used to. I could feel it inside me! I had HORRIBLE periods, sometimes lasting up to 15 days. They told me my body would need time to adjust to the birth, I had a very difficult birth but I recovered well. When I missed my period in May 2009, I thought that I couldn't possibly be pregnant. 2 more weeks passed and still nothing. I did a pregnancy test... positive, another +, I did 6 tests just to be sure. Then I started freaking out because I knew the risks. I went to the doctor on Monday (I found out on Saturday). The doctor told me that they would monitor me every day by measuring my HCG levels. On Wednesday I was playing with my daughter and had severe cramps all day. After an hour of severe spasms, I began to feel pain in my ovaries. After another hour, I could barely get off the floor to find my phone and call my husband at work. He called an ambulance and when they arrived my 18 month old daughter was lying next to me crying with me. I had an ectopic pregnancy. The IUD had become detached and grown into my uterine wall, which explained the pain and long, heavy periods.
When they found out what the problem was, they thought he would be a good candidate for the injection, which they use instead of surgery. It took two injections and 6 weeks of unbearable bleeding and pain. Not to mention the development of losing a baby. I will not recommend anyone to buy this. My girlfriend just had a baby in April and she had Mirena a week before I found out. She was depressed, had terrible cramps and was bleeding profusely.
If you have any doubts about this. Turn off.

ok you scare me.. hahaha
Seriously, I'm going to call the doctor because I have what you guys have.
The IUD has totally lengthened my entire cycle.
My period comes every 6 months or so.
Well, all of a sudden I had my period this month from early December.
So it takes 3 weeks.
I'll call the doctor.
it doesn't look good to me...
I can ask him to take it off.
I've had it since 2007 after my daughter was born.
And they've been having problems lately.
My sister-in-law had an ectopic pregnancy last month.
She had the other IUD for 10 years.
So I'm careful now...
I tell every woman out there, if you're having problems, call your doctor.
We know our bodies better than anyone!
Thanks for this post, you helped me a lot, I thought I was the only one
I'm going through it... wait ladies... ;-))

I have had my second Mirena IUD in almost 5 years. I've never had a single problem with it. I love that! I had one before my second child and I loved it too. I hardly ever have my periods and when I do they are very light and only last about 2 days. Well, 3 days ago I started bleeding. Strong! I run tampons every few hours. There are also many blood clots. It's finally time for me to go to my doctor today. I feel no pain, no discomfort, no cramps, no symptoms. I have been with the same partner for almost a year, so there are no new changes either. The only thing I can think of is maybe they're out of hormones as she's due to be replaced within the next month, so it's a super heavy period. And any ideas?

I've only had my first Mirena for about 4 years, something similar happened to me. 4 years of light periods and then suddenly heavy bleeding with large lumps. I called my doctor and he told me not to worry, it might need to be changed. I think hormone levels can drop a bit with age?

Wow, I was trying to search for something else and stumbled across this. I had the Mirena in March 2006, a month and a half after my son was born. and as someone else said, it was the most painful insertion of my life! with lots of bleeding and pain almost all the time. about a year and a few months later i wanted to get out and went to my doctor. To my wonderful surprise, it dug into the wall of my uterus. They operated on me to remove it. However, the pain I felt during my time on Mirena never went away. My periods have never been the same again. I always had severe cramping and bleeding for the first few days, normal, but now I feel like I get my period 10-15 times a day for about 21 days, then bleed for a day or two with no pain for about 5 days. weird, irritating and quite painful. My doctor said the pain would go away once I got pregnant. Well, she was right about that. In short, my entire pregnancy was free of this pain and my daughter is already 6 months old and now everything is back. I've had so many ultrasounds and tests. no one can find out anything and basically they are telling me to take some Tylenol. It is very disturbing and makes me very anxious at times. Well, all this ramblings came from the Mirena topic. I have nothing good to say about it and somehow I understand the pain I still feel. I understand that pregnancy can change your menstrual cycle as you age, but really? this end?

Guys I've had Mirena for 5 years now and I love it! I stopped taking it firstly because it was time and secondly because I was thinking of getting pregnant.
I have always had long and heavy periods due to polycystic ovaries. But two months after the Mirena removal, the longest time of my life began: 3 months in a row and counting! I'm so tired from menstruation! I've bled like there's no tomorrow for the 5 years I haven't had my period.
I want to put the Mirena back on but I have to wait for all the bleeding to stop. I wonder why this is taking so long!

omg.. i have the same problem now. I'm freaking out too. I have had Mirena for about three years and suddenly I have heavy bleeding. Not just a little, a lot. I haven't had a period since I got it. I've experienced a bit of bleeding here and there, but never anything like this. I was thinking of seeing a doctor but wanted to do some research first. It's a small relief to know I'm not the only one. I just googled "bleeding after 3 years of IUD" and your post came up. hahaha! I have a lot of cramps and I haven't felt them in years! ok.. I'm going to the doctor now.

I've had my IUD since June 2006 and have the occasional spotting, but really nothing that lasts more than a day or two. It was four days last month. Then last week I started bleeding during sex. Eight days later I'm still bleeding and a small clot is falling out. I'm freaking out a bit because the heavy, uncontrollable bleeding is the reason I got the IUD in the first place.
However, my insertion experience was amazing, no more uncomfortable than a pap smear and I had no issues with wires or sex. Although, I have to say, I've had spotting during sex on a number of occasions. I hope it's all those things this time too. Does it only change the IUD?
I can't tell you how happy I was to find this blog and hear your stories. I don't want to be the only one whose body is wrong sometimes. But if you have heavy and persistent bleeding, seek medical attention immediately! I used to wait and became VERY anemic. I had to be hospitalized and they gave me a blood transfusion. Don't ignore your body.
It's strange that after 4 years without it I'm going to the doctor soon. The problem is that I don't have insurance at the moment. :-(
